Texas ( /ˈtɛksəs/ (help·info)) is the second-largest U.S. state in both area and population, and the largest state in the contiguous United States. The name, meaning "friends" or "allies" in Caddo, was applied by the Spanish to the Caddo themselves and to the region of their settlement in East Texas. Located in the South Central United States, Texas is bordered by Mexico to the south, New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km), and a growing population of 24.7 million residents. Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while Dallas–Fort Worth and Houston are the fourth- and sixth-largest United States metropolitan areas, respectively. Other major cities include San Antonio, El Paso, and Austin—the state capital. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as an independent republic and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texas State Flag and on the Texas State Seal today. Due to its size and geologic features such as the Balcones Fault, Texas contains diverse landscapes that resemble both the American South and the Southwest. Although Texas is popularly associated with the Southwestern deserts, less than 10% of the land area is desert. Most of the population centers are located in areas of former prairies, grasslands, forests, and the coastline. Traveling from east to west, one can observe terrain that ranges from coastal swamps and piney woods, to rolling plains and rugged hills, and finally the desert and mountains of the Big Bend. Due to its long history as a center of the American cattle industry, Texas is associated with the image of the cowboy. The term "six flags over Texas" came from the several nations that had rule over the territory. Spain was the first European country to claim the area of Texas. France held a short-lived colony in Texas. Mexico controlled the territory until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming an independent Republic. In 1845 it joined the United States as the 28th state. The state's annexation set off a chain of events that caused the Mexican–American War in 1846. Texas declared its secession from the United States in early 1861, joining the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. After the war and its restoration to the Union, Texas entered a long period of economic stagnation. In the early 1900s, oil discoveries initiated an economic boom in the state. Texas has since economically diversified. Today it has more Fortune 500 companies than any other U.S. state. With a growing base of industry, the state is a leader in many, including agriculture, petrochemicals, energy, computers and electronics, aerospace, and biomedical sciences. It leads the nation in export revenue since 2002 and has the second-highest gross state product. From Wikipedia under the

I know many schools want you to live in Texas for at least 12-months, how can you prove you've lived in Texas for 12 months? What if you lived in texas for 3 months before getting a local driver's license, do schools only accept the time after you go the license or is there a way to show you've already lived in Texas before the license was recieved. Asked by Riven - Thu Dec 14 17:37:26 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Show the school your lease with the date it was signed. They have to accept it as proof of date of residency. If lease is not in your name, show them mail addressed to you, postmarked from date of residency...mail like credit card bills, utility bills, car loan, etc. Answered by txharleygirl1 - Thu Dec 14 17:54:16 2006 What is the Texas law on accessing and reading another person's email without their consent? Q. Can anyone point me to any websites where I can read up on the Texas law regarding accessing and reading another person's personal email without their permission? The email was not associated with work, just a personal hotmail or yahoo account. The person who did this did not have permission to access the account at anytime and was never given the login in or password. They also did not access the account for any monetary reasons. It appears they read the emails just to read the emails. This person also does not live in my house so the account was accessed from a different location, possibly their home. What legal rights do I have regarding this matter? Asked by A3Mama - Sun Aug 26 16:15:44 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. It's not Texas law, it's federal law. Accessing a computer without consent is a criminal violation. Answered by David B - Sun Aug 26 20:06:00 2007 What will Texas fans do if Oklahoma loses to Missouri and they put USC in the BCS championship?
Q. USC blowing out UCLA could possibly put them ahead of Texas, just saying. UCLA would have won their conference and Texas would not have. I don't think Oklahoma will fall to Missouri but I didn't think Pitt would beat West Virginia last year either. Asked by JMF - Mon Dec 1 17:21:02 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. we would protest, and ask the President of the University of Texas to put us in the SEC. edit usc would NOT jump Texas. The BCS point gap between Texas and USC is too great. Pundits are now wondering if the gap is too great between Texas and Florida.
